The Acting Tips

The Sunday Giveaway: An Audition Workshop with Rachel Hoffman …

May 21st, 2012

This one is for the Actors out there.

I’ve given out Audition Tips for Actors on this blog before, and now it’s time for you to hear it from a true audition expert.  Rachel Hoffman of Telsey Casting, has literally seen tens of thousands of auditions over her career for everything from Evita to Newsies to Spiderman and more, and now she’s going to share her tips with you in an Audition Workshop on 5/31!  Click here for more info.

And one of you is going for f-f-f-free.

Here’s how to win!

Audition stories are awesome.  My favorite nugget from my days as a “twirlie” (which is what my good friend Joey calls Singer/Actor/Dancers) was the day I was asked to do a double pirouette at a callback for Peter Pan.  By myself.  In front of everyone.  Not a single, mind you, but a double, which at this point in my career I had pulled off . . . oh . . . maybe NEVER.  Singles?  Sure.  Doubles?  Meh.  But I sucked it up and did it . . . and fell flat on my face.  In front of everyone.

Irony is?

I got the gig.  And there were no freekin’ double pirouettes in Peter Pan.

What’s your favorite audition story?  Share it below (emailers, click here) and one of you will win a free spot to let Rachel Hoffman tune you up so you can land that Broadway gig.

Stage acting tips for beginners | RichmondVATheater.com

May 21st, 2012

If you are looking to break into the acting and theatre industry, then here are a few tips that will help you to perfect your talent. One of the most important things for a stage actor is their voice. Therefore you must pay close attention to it, in order to ensure it is always in the best possible condition. You can look after your voice by sipping hot water with lemon and honey and if you want to drink plain water, then it should always be warm, or at room temperature. The reason for this rule is that cold water can constrict your vocal chords, making your voice less strong and prominent.

For an actor or actress to succeed in the theatre environment, they must be good at working and cooperating with others. You and your co-stars should make an effort to bond together as a unit and as friends. Perhaps you could all go out for dinner regularly, or play some cheeky bingo together when you have some free time. When a theatre group is a strong team, you will be able to plan rehearsals and organize shows much better and it will improve your overall performance on stage. If you have any problems or need help with any part of the show, then do not be afraid to ask for suggestions from the rest of the group. You should all be there to support each other and provide advice when needed.

Passion is another key element of a successful stage actor or actress. If you are interested in what you do and enjoy performing, then this will come across while you are on stage and your acting will be all the more impressive. Enjoy yourself while rehearsing or during performances and you will find that your acting skills and confidence quickly improve.

Practical Tips for Appearing at Casting Auditions

May 18th, 2012

Are you planning to appear at the auditions for movies or TV? Are you new to the industry and do not have much knowledge about auditioning? If yes, you must try to find out if you are auditioning alone or with a group of performers. In the first case, there is no proper schedule and the casting agent may call you any time to show your talent or skills. However, if it is a group casting audition, there is a fixed timing and you have to adhere to the specified timings for the upcoming cast call. You need to locate the actors who are going to perform with you. It is very helpful, if you join them to rehearse the dialogues and scenes. Make yourself comfortable with them to bring out better on-stage chemistry. This will help you to perform with confidence.

As you know, the purpose of an audition is to check out how good or bad actor you are.

Casting directors and producers deeply look into your acting talent, because they have to find out the best actor for their movies, serials and TV shows. While you come for auditioning, it is important to bring your portfolio because casting judges want to know about your education, your experience in acting, where do you stand, whether you will fit into their requirement or not and so on. People from entertainment industry also want to know if you have passion for acting.

When appearing for the auditions, you need to wear suitable clothes as per the need of your role. How you look will be the first impression you will be creating in the minds of cast judges. You should be aware of the type of cast and character and should dress yourself to match your role. By the way, you do not know what exactly your role is, avoid putting on dress with crazy designs and patterns. This can distract judges and confuse them whether to cast you or not. It is advisable not to wear sexy tops and flirtatious shorts and skirts. Dress properly and give sober appearance to impress everyone. Wear light and comfortable clothes and avoid tight or body hugging dresses, as judges are going to see your acting skills, not your fashion and style.

Though dressing sensibly also improves your chances of getting the acting work, rehearing for dialogues and the scene beforehand is the top priority to succeed at auditions. Remember, there is a large crowd at cast calls and if you do not rehearse and practice in advance, you will not be able to perform your best. You will not able to show confidence in your acting. And all this may hamper your chances of find a role in a movie, serial, TV show or any other cast.

Educational Benefits of Performing Arts in Childhood and 10 Tips to …

May 18th, 2012
Children have an almоѕt non- stop desire tо be creative. They live іn а mental space thаt іѕ constantly curious, expressive, physical, at play, аnd engaged. The importance оf nurturing thіs creativity іs wеll documented аnd haѕ amazing benefits. A child whо is exposed tо and involved іn the performing arts oftеn develops а greater capacity fоr learning. Through thе arts, children arе encouraged to depend on themsеlvеѕ creatively, ѕо thеy learn hоw to solve problems better, whіle developing thе ability to rely on thеmѕelveѕ to bring new ideas into the world. They learn to listen to theіr own compass; speak from thеіr souls.

This іs nоt to ѕаy thаt аll children should beсоme professional performers. It simply means whеn children participate in the performing arts thеу beсоme bettеr equipped tо lооk аt thе world from mаnу dіffеrent vantage points. The arts alѕо innately provide a spiritual component. When a child engages in performing arts activities theу аre stripped of pretenses and theу speak frоm thе heart.

Then, thеre аrе the academic benefits. The fоllоwing іѕ frоm Americans fоr the Arts:
Young people whо participate in the arts fоr аt least three hours оn thrеe days eасh week thrоugh at lеаѕt оne full year are:

# 4 times mоre likely tо bе recognized for academic achievement
# 3 times more lіkely tо bе elected to class office within theіr schools
# 4 times more lіkеly to participate іn a math аnd science fair
# 3 times morе lіkelу to win аn award for school attendance
# 4 times morе lіkеlу tо win аn award for writing an essay оr poem

Add tо thеse thе benefits tо brain development and уou have a recipe for children whо grow uр tо give thе world amazing gifts.

The following іs а list I havе put togеthеr to give уou a littlе nudge in thе direction of engaging your child in thе performing arts:

10 Tips to Nurture Your Creative Child:

* Encourage play acting and dress up; this stimulates а child’s imagination.
* Create а special “acting out” area іn уоur home. Build а mini-stage, hang curtains frоm ceiling hooks, throw ѕomе dress-up clothes іn a costume chest аnd voila; instant theatre for уоur lіttlе thespians.
* Encourage уоur child(ren) to compose or make up theіr оwn songs аnd rhymes.
* Put on ѕоme beautiful instrumental music; classical оr jazz, grab crayons or paints, ѕome craft paper and hаve your child “draw whаt thеу hear”. This allоwѕ them to bеcomе lost in thе music аnd makeup their оwn story. Then аѕk them what thеy heard. This will helр thеm develop thеir story telling ability.
* Encourage repetition. Kids love tо find а song or somеthing theу find funny аnd dо іt agaіn and agaіn and again. Embrace this quality.
* Read everу day to your children. A comprehensive uѕe of language skills and word play аre critical for аll children, including thе budding artist, аnd оnе gets thіѕ from reading consistently.
* When reading rhymes, poetry, Dr. Seuss, A.A. Milne, etc. to yоur child, emphasize thе rhythms. Rhyming books, stories, poetry аrе inherently musical whісh helps tо develop а child’s “ear” for language.
* Our voices аrе capable оf а myriad of sounds. When reading tо уоur children usе dіfferеnt vocal qualities and dialects. Don’t worry; іt doеѕn’t have tо be perfect! Kid’s just love іt when yоu act оut and usе diffеrent voices fоr diffеrent characters.
* Take уоur time when уоu read tо yоur children. When уоu immerse уoursеlf in а story, thеу will follow suit.
* Stop аt а cliff hanger whеn reading narrative so thеy cаn’t wait tо hear the next installment.

LEARN TO LISTEN | Plaintiff Trial Lawyer Tips

May 15th, 2012

I’ve written about the relationship of stage presence for actors and it’s importance for trial lawyers. There is a similar connection between listening in theater and for trial lawyers.

Actors must learn to respond to the other actor’s lines. That requires good eye contact, intense listening and good timing. It has been said that even when the actor doesn’t have a line and is not involved with a speaking part, they still must listen intently to what is going on and being said on the stage. Their failure to do so is a distraction as well as not staying in role. Good listening is an actor’s skill. It’s been pointed out that actor Judi Dench has exceptional stage presence because even when she is silent, she is so fully engaged in her character and listening to what the other actors are saying, that she is acting even when she is motionless.

The actor, Marlon Brando once said: “an actor is a guy, who, if you aren’t talking about him, isn’t listening. How about lawyers? What is the single most common discourteous characteristic of trial lawyers? That’s easy. They don’t listen. They don’t maintain eye contact with the person speaking and they don’t demonstrate that they are interested and paying attention to what is being said. Instead, they are thinking about what they are going to say next. Worse, they often interrupt or finish the other person’s sentence. Lawyers are too often “know it all’s” who don’t listen and want everyone to know how smart they are. In the process they lose good will and credibility.

Good listening is an essential part of being a good trial lawyer. Take jury selection. You should never break eye contact with a juror as long as they are speaking to you. Look at your notes or make notes only when they have finished talking. In direct or cross examination you should focus on the witness and listen intently to what is being said. Maintain eye contact and focus while witness is speaking unless you deliberately have some other motive in mind. Look at your next question or your notes only when they have finished. If you want to make a good impression on the judge listen to them when they are speaking and never interrupt. The same skills actors need in listening are required for trial lawyers.

3 Tactics On How To Get My Ex Back Instantly | Internet Millionaire …

May 9th, 2012

Break ups are often very tough to cope with and many are quite nerve-racking and traumatic. Although the romantic relationship continues to be struggling maybe you were not actually ready for splitting up and so are now asking yourself the question “how to get my ex back?” Even if your breakup is a very distressing one there’s typically still a little hope of getting back together. If you already know the right steps to take and the way to act toward your ex you then may be capable to repair your relationship. Here are a few tips and tricks that will help you win your ex back and some things that you may want to avoid.

Tips and hints

Tip #1: be yourself. Acting like someone else simply to try and win your ex back won’t help matters in the long term. Even if acting in another way enables them to to like you temporarily, it is hard to keep up the facade long-term and eventually you may fall back into acting like yourself, so if you actually want to become successful at getting your ex back then begin acting like yourself.

Tip #2: never make use of the technique of trying to make him jealous to get him back. Flirting with his friends in front of him will simply hurt his feelings and can make the problem worse. Some people use flirting to make their ex jealous while others use it to acquire revenge, either way it might backfire and you also could lose him forever.

Tip #3: be truthful with your ex and don’t be afraid to tell him how you feel. Never go overboard and behave like life is not worth living without him, you don’t want to appear desperate. Talk to him and tell him you still love him and you still want this romantic relationship to work. You never know, there is a chance that he may be feeling the same way and also wish to give it another go.

Things to Stay away from

Items to Avoid #1 if both of you agree to give the partnership another go then you desire to make things clear from the very beginning that you are serious about your relationship. Avoid entering into a habit of “on and off dating” as this may be heart breaking and is not good for anybody. Have a really good “think” about how you feel and if making this romantic relationship work is really what you would like and talk to him so that you can find out if he really wants it to work too.

Things to Avoid #2: don”t forget about the problems that resulted in your relationship splitting up to start with. If you want to save this romantic relationship and change it around to a happy relationship then you need to work on any issues that you had. If you ignore the causes of your breakup then you can’t move past them, it is important that you face any complications you had to go on and have a healthy partnership.

You’ll be able to get ur ex back however, you must be sensible in your approach. Use these tips and items to avoid and build a stronger, healthier relationship that will be designed to last.

They Grow Up So Fast: 7 Child Actors Who Have A Legitimate Shot …

7 Child Actors We Wouldn’t Nominate For The Hunger Games. . .Not So Fast “Modern Family” Cast

By Joanna Robinson | Posted Under Seriously Random Lists | Comments (27)

maisie-williams-sophie-turner-game-of-thrones-lord-snow-01.png

It is a truth universally acknowledged that good kid actors are hard to find. It doesn’t take much to ruin a scene. The flash of a saccharine smile or flat, stilted delivery are enough to ruin a perfectly good dramatic or comedic scene. And I could spend days deriding the worts kid actors on television. A fellow critic was joking the other day that they would pay good money to see the kids from several shows (“The Good Wife,” “Smash” and “Once Upon A Time” spring immediately to mind) in some sort of Hunger Games scenario. But I don’t come to you today with hate in my heart. Today is all about heaping praise on those kids (with a hat tip to the excellent casting agents) who can go toe to toe with the acting heavyweights that populate their shows. And I’m not talking about the twenty (and sometimes thirty) somethings that pass as teens. Those actors do a fine job in their own right (particularly Jane Levy of “Suburgatory”) but are somehow less impressive. The following are kids that are much more than a cute face and could legitimately have a future on both big screens and small.

“Game of Thrones”—Jack Gleeson—Age 19: The main reason Gleeson belongs on this list is that he is, by all reports, a swell kid. It’s not his fault that the character he plays (and plays quite well) makes your blood pressure pound and your fingers itching to throttle. Gleeson isn’t much interested in a career in acting. He’s told the Irish Independent that he’d prefer a different course: “I’d like to be an academic, a philosophy lecturer if possible. I’d do a Masters in Ancient Hebrew maybe, and a PhD hopefully, if I get in.” For now, however, he’s softening his reputation a bit by appearing in
“a puppet musical.” Oh you heard me.
8hvCY.jpg

“American Horror Story”—Taissa Farmiga—Age 17: Farmiga (much younger sister of the lovely Vera) benefited from some excellent scene partners during her season on FX’s batsh*t “American Horror Story.” Between Evan Peters (just a shade too old for this list) and Jessica Lange, she had plenty of talent buoying her up. But in the latter half of the season, when the Violet character was allowed to do something other than sulk, Taissa showed that she was more than just a pouty face. She won’t be returning for the next season of “AHS,” but she will be appearing in Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring.
Taissa-Farmiga-and-Vera-Farmiga-taissa-farmiga-28063844-2560-1707.jpg

“Justified”—Kaitlyn Dever—Age 15: Dever is currently (criminally) wasting her talent on Tim Allen’s dumber than a bag of Tool Time hammers comedy “Last Man Standing.” However, her schedule did permit a brief return to the “Justified” universe where she once again held her own against Timothy Olyphant (as she did last year with Olyphant, Jeremy Davies and the magnificent Margo Martindale). I’m praying for a swift cancellation for that Tim Allen show so Dever can once again dazzle in material that’s more worthy of her talent.
kdjustb46.jpg

“Game Of Thrones”—Sophie Turner—Age 16: Ooooo, careful, don’t confuse the subtle loveliness of England’s Sophie Turner with the, ah, more obvious charms of the
Australian one. Sophie Turner’s first and only role has been as the spoiled (yet steely) Sansa Stark on HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” And as enjoyably whiney as she was last year, she’s shown her true acting stripes this year. Each humiliation and torment Sansa weathers just further proves Turner’s depth as an actress.
sophie.jpg

“Parenthood”—Miles Heizer—Age 17: I’ve been quite vocal in my praise for “Parenthood“‘s Mae Whitman. (Yes, her.) But as good as Whitman is (and just a hair too old for this list), it was the actor who plays her brother, Miles Heizer, who had one of the very best moments of the season this year. I joked for the first few seasons that I could never remember this kid’s name (Tommy? Bobby? Sam? Oh DREW!), but after an emotional exchange between Heizer and Jason Ritter, I was a complete convert. Check it out and tell me this doesn’t ring completely true.
parenthood-graham-miles-mae.jpg

“Game Of Thrones”—Maisie Williams—Age 15: First of all, look how tiny Maisie was when she started filming. Just a tiny little Midge in a helmet!
GameOfThrones_BehindTheScenes01_Screencap29.jpg
But over the past two years, Williams has grown into one of the finest actresses on TV. In this past week’s episode, when Arya Stark had to stare down Charles Dance’s Tywin Lannister, I can’t have been the only one who got chills. Though Williams is the third “GoT” kid on the list, I cannot stress enough how important it has been for the success of the show that the young actors nail their parts. And they have, each one. I cannot wait to see Williams continue to mature in this phenomenal role.
arya.jpg

“Mad Men”—Kiernan Shipka—Age 12: And while the Stark/Baratheon kids may dominate this list, it’s young Sally Draper who wins the crown. She was only 7 when filming began on “Mad Men” and existed for the first few seasons as a prop/scenery to the Draper home life.
sally.jpg
But after a fantastic storyline in Season 3, Kiernan was promoted to a series regular in Season 4. Fans of the show cannot deny that Shipka has earned that title and continues to prove, week after week, that she’s one of the most compelling reasons to watch this show.

Joanna Robinson thinks, with the exception of Sarah Hyland, that the entire kid cast of “Modern Family” should fall in a volcano…and take those teenaged brats from “Revenge” along with them.
